Tory Burch’s “Juju On That Beat” Ad Criticized for Cultural Appropriation [YouTube/Teen Vogue]
Tory Burch has faced a wave of internet backlash after posting a new ad for her summer collection starring Poppy Delevingne dancing to “Juju on that Beat,” the hit song by African-American artists Zay Hilfigerrr and Zayion McCall. The 30-year-old, flanked by two other white models, is seen performing the viral dance routine (which peaked in popularity about six months ago) in the video, which is interspersed with images of a monkey riding in the front seat of a car with Delevingne. Commenters criticized the designer for cultural appropriation and her failure to include a woman of color in the ads. According to Teen Vogue, Burch herself apologized in the comment section of the video, which has since been disabled.
